Introduction

When it comes to specialization in watches, Casio is certainly renowned for its elegant and multi-functional watches in the watch manufacturing industry today.

One of the innovative additions to its collection is the Casio ProTrek PRW 3000. With the introduction of ProTrek line, Casio was able to achieve the impossible which was anticipated by every single outdoor enthusiast.

They have managed to introduce an outdoors watch line with tons of valuable features that would originate with no conciliation on the design portion and most importantly, still sustains an unbelievably affordable price.

This is the main reason why the ProTrek line is already eminent and is certain to follow the success of the G-Shock line.

Without any doubt, Casio watches are prevalent all over the world, particularly with the young crowd. Even most celebrities or renowned figures are commonly seen wearing Casio watches though, generally the Casio G-Shock series.

However, while the Casio G-Shock and Casio Baby G-Shock are fashionable, for an outdoor enthusiast’s lifestyle, the ideal Casio is the ProTrek series.

Formerly known as the Pathfinder series, the ProTrek offers a unique style and persistence in the Casio line as an electronic tool watch that focuses less on being fashionable and more on being reliable and consistent.

You may have noticed my interest in multi-sports watches through my other reviews of the Garmin Fenix 5, Garmin Tactix, Suunto Traverse and others.

Now, let’s talk about the most fascinating features and parts of this watch in my detailed Casio ProTrek PRW-3000 review and demonstrate to you if it can be worth your money.

Features and Specifications

Design

The Casio ProTrek PRW 3000 is largely made of plastic resin. However, the back and the bezel are made from stainless steel. What we can observe from the beginning is that this ProTrek is lighter, smaller and slimmer than the preceding models which were designed to sit high on the wrist and were mostly 55+ mm in diameter.

The core reason behind the small size and compact design of the Casio ProTrek is the 24mm gray plastic band which tapers rapidly to 18mm. In addition, at a mere 64 grams this is basically the coolest Casio ProTrek to wear, specifically when used for its envisioned energetic activities.

The primary style for the PRW 3000 is not much different from its previous ProTrek and Pathfinders, but a rather refined form, since it’s a bit minor and lighter and thinner at 12mm.

The mineral crystal seems to consume a bigger portion of the dial and is very evident, especially when you are wearing polarized glasses during extreme sports.

The triple sensor technology implements the ABC sensors (Altimeter, Barometric pressure, and Compass) just like in previous versions.

Nevertheless, Casio accomplished to cut the size of the sensor by incredibly more than 95% while also ensuring that it uses 90% less power!

Moreover, the triple sensor data is massively improved. The altimeter reading is now at 1-meter accuracy, barometric pressure difference exists within 0.3%, and compass bearing for 60 seconds…!!

Solar Sensor

The watch also comprises of a solar sensor, which is extremely durable and will operate in extreme conditions. This means that you won’t have to worry about charging this watch for the rest of your life.

You just must wear it every few months or so in a bright or lighted place. The solar battery has the ability to boost itself via home light as well.

To accomplish this astounding feat, Casio engineers worked on adding power saving features that lets the watch to shutdown automatically and wake up only when used, thus packing the watch for weeks on will never be an issue.

Automatic Light

One more greatly enhanced feature is the auto-light which only functions when the ambient light is particularly low (e.g., at night). You just need to flick your wrist and the ProTrek dial brightens for a few seconds in a white, clearly visible light.

Light-weight

This latest design simply reflects this version as the most comfortable Casio of the lot. It’s extremely light weight accounts for the comfort and it does not impact the overall weight while mountain biking by any means.

This factor is of critical importance because the numerous shocks and vibrations encountered during mountain biking may gave rise to many problems for you later.

ABC Sensors

The innovative triple sensor (comprising of the altimeter, digital compass, and barometer) is not merely a feature that Casio loves to acclaim; it essentially is one of those significant functions which make the Casio PRW-3000 a true dynamo. And here is why:

Altimeter

The altimeter makes your life easier regardless if you are a hunter who wants to find out if he stretched the proper height where a specific animal wanders, a botanist who has a desire to know where a certain plant grows, a hiker who is willing to beat his own record or just a humble traveler, for the reason that it makes precise readings of the altitude grounded on a reference point.

This point does have to be set by you, and is relatively simple to do so. You just have to press the altimeter button present on the right side of the watch whenever you are present in a location where the altitude is precisely measured then you are prepared to roll.

Barometer

The barometer will mark you as a weather wizard, the reason is that you will be capable to make weather predictions based only on the air pressure. Is the barometric pressure slighter than usual? Then, expect a rain or storm. Else, good weather is expected to come by.

Compass

Lastly, the digital compass will save you when you seem to lose direction. Just press the dedicated button on the right side of the watch and the degrees and abbreviation of the cardinal point will illustrate up on the display.

Additional Features

In addition to providing you valuable survival features like current temperature, barometric pressure and its variation over time, as well as the present altimeter reading of wherever you are, the watch also encompasses several features mutual in the Casio lineup.

It is water resistant up to 100m, it can display information on sunrise and sunset, can illustrate 31 time zones, has five alarms, possesses a countdown timer as well as a stopwatch precise to the 1/10 seconds, and offers a perpetual calendar until the year 2099.

The watch can routinely connect itself to one of the atomic clock signals present around the world and regulates itself. This adjustment consumes time and is best achieved when in the environment best suitable for this watch, the outdoors.

The one thing that this watch doesn’t have is GPS so if you’re looking for a watch with GPS then the PRW3000 is not for you. You can check other great watches in my other article.

Alternative Models

Casio offers a few types of ProTrek watches like the one being discussed here. Basically, there are two models comprising of an orange band and a yellow accent band, while a titanium version also exists. If you are into military styled watches, you can also find a Casio ProTrek model in that version.

For a price range as low as it comes in, ProTrek is simply one of the most recommended watches in the market. Moreover, it proves to be a valuable multi-function equipment for all those outdoor enthusiasts.

It doesn’t matter if it is hiking, mountain biking, camping, or if you simply love to stay outdoors. Apart from a sensitive GPS, this watch might prove to be the most vital tool for any mountaineering action.

A watch designed for mountaineering and hiking

While clearly being a Casio watch with complete features and design-style that Casio is acknowledged for, the Casio ProTrek is destined for usage during adventure sports and hiking and that’s why it made it to my list of the best hiking watches for 2017!

Suunto Traverse for Hiking

From the appearance to the features, everything about this watch compels you to take it to the outdoors. The numerous features, the rugged appearance and the sensation of the watch is intended for energetic and adventurous people.

It’s the kind of watch you want if you appear to be in a fight for survival. A wide majority of the ProTrek models are large, although they don’t wear tremendously. An exceptional feature about the PRW3000 is that it is relatively smaller in size.
